So you’ve decided that you want to use a cannabis tincture, and maybe you’ve even decided on the perfect ratio! The next step is knowing the cannabis tincture dosage that’s right for your needs.

Dosing can be a tricky thing to initially get right. On one hand, you don’t want to dose too low because then you may not reach the desired effects. Yet, on the other hand, you don’t want to dose too high for, well, obvious reasons.

Start Small When it Comes to Cannabis Tincture Dosing

Ultimately though, it’s always best to start small when it comes to dosing. My mantra for cannabis consumption is that you can always take more but you can never take less. We’ve all heard the age-old story of edibles gone wrong. You take an edible and an hour goes by and you’re still not feeling anything. So you decide to take another dose, but 10 minutes after eating a second dose you start to feel that first one. Then that second one hits and you’re absolutely floored and well, the same thing can happen with a tincture.

Follow the Recommended Starting Dose

The majority of tinctures will come in a bottle where the dropper has four markings like the image to the right, each one representing a quarter of a milliliter. This bottle typically comes packaged in a box with cannabis tincture dosing instructions printed on the side, including a good starting dose. Each tincture is made differently, however, the most common recommended starting dose is 0.25 ml.tincture dropper

For inexperienced cannabis users, I often suggest starting with the dose written on the bottle or even halving it to 0.125 ml. You can always take more but you can never take less. As discussed in “How to Use a Cannabis Tincture,” tinctures can be taken sublingually and have the potential to kick in much faster than a typical edible. Effects may be felt within 20-30 minutes, but for your first few times of using a tincture, it is best to play it safe and wait a few hours before dosing again.

As is the case with finding the perfect tincture ratio, there will likely be some trial and error involved in finding the perfect dose of tincture. You may want to experiment with a higher or lower dosage after the first use until you find a dose that works best for you. Once you figure out the perfect ratio and dose, a tincture is an easy and effective way to consume cannabis.
